Fulfilling Dreams

Do you ever dream about a life you wish you could live? Have you ever thought of ideas or things you would love to do if only you didn’t have your current obligations? Do you have a wish list or things you want to do or places you want to go before you die? If you don’t have such a list, please spend some time thinking about this. One of the best imaginative exercises I have done is to pretend that you have been given a year off work and other commitments and unlimited money in order to pursue a dream. In addition, you cannot fail. Think about it for a few minutes. Then sit down and begin writing whatever comes into your head.

What would you do? Where would you do it? What would your life look like? How would you feel? Don’t hold back. Don’t put obstacles in your way. Just pretend for a few minutes and express yourself. Describe your dream. Is it a dream job? Going back to school or University? Travelling? Starting a business? Creating music, art or drama?

An example might be: I would be writing music and singing in a band. I would be living in London and going to venues every night and writing music during the day. I would be dressed in all the modern funky clothes that Londoners wear. My hair, nails and makeup would be exquisite. I would meet lots of interesting musicians and make contacts with record producers. My life would be exciting, vibrant and spontaneous.

Another example: I would be living in an eco friendly village in a mud brick house that I designed and built myself. I would have an organic vegetable garden, free range chickens and fruit trees. My home would be powered with solar energy and I would live self-sufficiently. I would be surrounded by like-minded people and we would share ideas and have interesting discussions. There would be a sense of community. I would feel relaxed and like I was making a contribution to the planet.

As you think about your dream and are writing about it, how do you feel? Excited? Scared? Moved?

The reality might be that you don’t have the year off work or the funds to pursue your dream right now, but is there another way you could work towards fulfilling it? Now that you have brainstormed lots of ideas, choose some of the doable things and set some goals that will bring you closer to what you really desire.

Why not create the London lifestyle in your own city or town? Get your hair and nails done and wear makeup and clothes that give you that funky feeling.  Maybe you could join an environmental group or get involved in an organic community garden. Start where you are at. Keep a copy of your dream somewhere prominent and read it regularly. If it is something you really want, you can make it happen. Have faith that the universe is waiting to manifest your dreams. We are the ones that put obstacles in our way and make excuses for why we can’t pursue our dreams.
